Saturday Tasting - Zinfandel & Zinfandel Blends

TastingStop by this Saturday, February 6th from 2-4PM for a tasting of 5 different Zins and Zin Blends.

Zinfandel is the third most popular wine in california (behind Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon), yet most people associate zinfandel with the "white zinfandel" sweet wines made popular by Sutter Home. While the wines come from the same grape, traditional "red" zinfandel wines are full bodied and complex.

Zinfandel is often praised for its ability to not only reflect its terroir but to also reflect the skill and style of its winemaker. Paul Draper (or Ridge Vineyards) is widely credited for spurring the current popularity of zinfandel, by experimenting with low-yield "old vines" and identifying many "ideal" zinfandel growing locations. In California, zinfandel is often found in the Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley of Sonoma, as well as areas from the central coast.

The wines we will be tasting are:

  • 2007 Campus Oaks Zinfandel - $13.99
Sourced from four blocks of vineyards which average 90 years of age, this Zinfandel delivers a great nose, wonderful mouth-feel, good legs and a silky-smooth finish. With over a half-dozen gold medals to its credit so far, it's easy to see why this varietal has become the flagship of the Campus Oaks line. A great value and perennial favorite at Crush Wine Shop.
  • 2006 Ridge Lytton Springs – $34.99 / Special $27.99
There is a bright spice note that drives through the complex dark fruit of this old-vine blend, which includes Petite Syrah (16%) and Carignane (4%). There is a rustic edge to this wine coupled with zesty acidity that makes it more versatile than most Zins for food pairings and some more time in the cellar. There are lots of flavors that pop out of the glass including blueberries, licorice, tar, leather and tart cherries. 92 points Stephen Tanzer / 91 Points Wine & Spirits.
  • 2007 Venge Scout’s Honor - $39.99 / Special $29.99
A blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, with a small amount of Charbono thrown in, this is one heck of a seductive wine that continues to be the kind of wine you wish more California wineries would make. This might be the best Scout’s Honor cuvee yet produced. Deep bluish/plum/purple, with an explosively aromatic nose of sweet roasted herbs and black and red cherries intermixed with blackberry, licorice, pepper, and floral notes, this wine has loads of fruit, an opulent, voluptuous mouthfeel, superb purity and texture, and a full-bodied finish. It is irresistible already, and promises to drink well for at least 6-7 years, assuming you can resist it. Only 950 cases of this jewel were produced. 92 points from The Wine Advocate.
  • 2007 Frank Family Zinfandel - $39.99
    (see description below)
  • 2007 Outpost Howell Mountain Zinfandel - $49.99
Outpost’s 2007 Zinfandel is a reassuringly terrific, spicy, briary example offering notes of minerals intermixed with lots of blue and red fruits, incense, pepper, and herbs. This full, heady, flavorful Zin should be drunk over the next 4-5 years. This is produced from the original Lamborn vineyard site. One of the highest rated wines from the vintage – 93 points from The Wine Advocate.

Each tasting includes five wines - all for $15 (half price for Crush Club members). The wines featured in the tasting will be on sale for 10% off regular price all day (15% off for Crush Club members), or you can always stock up with our special case discounts. (discounts not applicable to wines with sale or special pricing)
